Laurens van Houte is manager of the surgical department of the hospital Medisch Spectrum Twente (MST) in Enschede, the Netherlands. He started as a scrubnurse, worked for 4 years for the ministry of defense, became in 2010 coordinator of the surgical department and since 2012 works as manager of the surgical department. MST is a top clinical hospital with 15 surgical theatres, where all the usual specialisms including neurosurgery and cardiac surgery are performed. With over 25 years of experience in surgical healthcare Laurens is well aware of the great sustainability challenges the sector is facing. He is highly driven to help making a change and therefore set himself the target of reducing the carbon-footprint of his surgical department with 5% in 2022, relative to 2021.
